SONGDO BEACH! It’s not the most well-known of Busan’s beaches. I mentioned it to a co-worker of mine who has lived here for four years, and he looked confused and said, “are you sure you don’t mean Songjeong beach?” and I said “EFFYEA I’M SURE!” I asked another co-worker and he said “oh, the beach with the whale in the water?” and I said “Yes.” And yes, it does have a big whale statue about 50 meters or so out in the water.
This beach is great because it is way less crowded than some of the other more popular beaches. Just after the beach season (in September), you’ll find hardly anyone there. Watch out for the chatty Russian guy with a baggy speedo, though.
The big commercial area is towards the Southwestern side of the beach.
Anyway, check it out. Suggested activities: getting freaked out by the jumping fish and the hermit crabs in the water; playing hit-ball in the water; doing bicycle kicks on the beach; constructing sand pyramids.
Directions: Metro Line 1 (orange) to Nampo, and go out exit 1. Walk about 10-20 meters down the street to the bus stop. Catch bus number 9 or 30 from there, and ride for about 20 minutes. Get off at the Song-do Hae-su-yok-jang (송도해수욕장)
