Caffeine and Sugar

By Laura Teague

Two things guaranteed to get you through a particularly dull week: coffee and cake. It’s unbelievable how many coffee chains there are in Busan, and new ones are springing up all the time. For anyone wanting a little more from their coffee experience than the usual chain-shop-fare, here’s the lowdown. The five greatest coffee and cake joints in Seomyeon, in no particular order, are:

Coffee Factory – Best for Coffee Taste

Coffee Factory - outside (1)

Sister to the two located in Nampo-dong, Coffee Factory prides itself on the in house blends and barista skills. They are the most delicious coffees I have found anywhere in Busan, they have a range of blends, all made in house from what I can gather. No true cakes here, but the tarts and cheesecakes here are absurdly delicious. Recently they have started serving sandwiches and fruit yoghurt as well. Those with Korean skills or a Korean friend can take the Barista training on the ground floor. For those less inclined to put the effort into their delicious coffees, the coffee shop is on the first floor.  (This is a little cheat as there are two others in Nampo, but they aren’t as prevalent as the normal Korean chains, so forgive me)

Review: The coffee is delicious and worth a visit, the price for the size is average. Coffees around 5,000, Cakes around 5,000.

Directions: Take exit 2 Seomyeon station. Walk straight, turn left at Tom and Tom’s café, turn right at the fork by Ella’s Café, and it is 200m on your left.

Café VerraBest for Cake Selection.

Definitely a great cake; they have a daily range of sweets in the store, the menu is extensive, cakes, tarts, macaroons, sweet breads and toasts, yoghurts and soufflés abound. There is a catch, every patron must also buy a drink, though sometimes on a quiet afternoon you can get away without it. The drink price isn’t the cheapest, but the cakes are definitely worth a visit.

Review: The best selection of cakes so far in Busan, cakes around 4,000 coffees around 6,000.

Directions for all others: Take exit 2 Seomyeon station. Walk straight, turn left at Tom and Tom’s café, take the left fork at Ella’s. Café Verra is just on your right, on the second floor.

Bricks CoffeeBest Atmosphere

Bricks Coffee - outside (1)

The atmosphere in here is awesome. The chairs are sparse, and it’s a great place to work and relax, an awesome selection of music never heard anywhere else in Busan. The lady who owns the store speaks great English, so for those with specific coffee orders, it’s a great place to try. They have a wonderful lunch deal of a cheese and ham toastie with an Americano for just 6,000 won.

Review: A nice place to be for a few hours, coffee prices are okay, 5,000 won.

Directions : Take exit 2 Seomyeon station. Walk straight, turn left at Tom and Tom’s café, take the left fork at Ella’s. Continue further down this street, and take the right fork, just past 69 Slam (an interesting underwear shop) on the right corner is Brick’s Coffee.

Big Cup Best for Coffee Value

Big Cup - outside

Definitely my very favourite coffee shop. No real  cakes to be found here, but the biggest coffees you will find anywhere. Coffee is served in a bowl, smoothies in a giant milkshake glass, and fresh fruit juices served in jugs. There are a few snacks on the menu, very reasonable too.

Review: Best value drinks here; coffees 3-4,000, juices 5,000, smoothies, 4500. Definitely worth a trip.

Turn right at Brick’s coffee and Big Cup is on the left side, on the second floor.

Coffee and Cake Studio Best Cake

Coffee and Cake Studio - inside

Hurrah! A decent cake. This place is gorgeous. Large seating areas look into the kitchen which is lovely and you can see the deliciousness in progress. The coffees are reasonably priced, and Americanos are *sometimes free refill (they have offered me this most of the time I have been there, but I don’t know if it’s official policy).

Review: THE place to go for your cake fix. Coffee 4-5000, cakes 4-5000.

Directions : Take exit 2 Seomyeon station. Walk straight, turn left at Tom and Tom’s café, take the left fork at Ella’s. Café Verra is just on your right, on the second floor. Continue down this street to find Cake and Coffee, on the right side of the street on the second floor.

Most of these delights are relatively new and have all sprung up in the same area of town. Help support your local businesses and don’t let Starbucks take over every corner of Busan!
